Disembarkation took hours once they hit Spacedock. Though there were only a handful of other ships from the primary fleet there, it seemed liked clearance to dock had taken forever and then getting the crew roster straightened out so they could get off Enterprise... Paperwork, Admirals' hails - necessary crap after a horrific event like this, but annoying nonetheless when all the crew wanted was to stand on Earth for a second and be reassured that the planet was still there.
But once they were cleared and the shuttles began carting people down to Earth, it would be two days before Enterprise was empty of her living inhabitants. Shuttles could only be run for so many hours at a time when going back and forth through atmo and every group coming off of them had to be debriefed prior to going to dorms, hotels, or family.
So by the time that Jim and Bones hit Terra Firma, they had been trapped on the ship for an additional forty-eight hours, needed medical attention (Jim), a stiff drink (Bones), and a bed since neither had had time for more than a catnap during it all. Jim had subsisted on stimulants, McCoy on the flow of adrenaline that flooded him every time a medical team came for one of his injured. They were both exhausted, but thankful as they dodged the camera crews and paparazzi and made their way toward Command with the rest of the Bridge Crew trailing them.
A little voice cut through the click-whirr of camera flashes, calling out, "Da! Da!"
Too weak to do more than wave, Jim could only watch as the daycare attendant who'd cared for the child throughout their absence handed their daughter over to Bones with a hug. She tossed a sad smile at Jim, knowing that for all the excitement they'd had saving the world, they had paid a pretty steep price.
Elizabeth was a nice, respectable name with no ties to either Jim or Bones or Gaila and they'd chosen it for that reason. No one could get upset she wasn't named for them, no one could complain she sounded more human or more Orion. It worked for them and it worked for Beth who, at the age of eight months, had already charmed the daycare center into her tiny palm.
And lord, but she looked like the woman who'd birthed her, though Gaila hadn't ever wanted a child; a favor to Jim and to Bones, she'd carried their baby once the embryo was successfully created with Starfleet Medical's aid. In return, when she was lonely, she would come to them or they would go to her. It was an arrangement that most people would have rejected outright, Bones was sure, because after all, what person would share their lover, let alone their husband? But it kept Jim happy and Bones liked Gaila and she was the mother of their child, so it never felt wrong.
Now they were standing in the middle of the quad with people milling around them and clapping and not one was a curly redhead with green skin and glittering eyes. The Farragut had been the first out of warp and while they had the consolation of knowing her death had been quick, neither needed to speak to remark on how much they wished she was there instead.
Broken out of their quiet spell by Barnett's voice, Jim startled, beginning to walk once more with one hand wrapped as tightly as he could around Bones' upper arm. They were directed to a waiting area with plenty of proper, formal-looking chairs and couches and Kirk slid back on to one with a sigh.
"As soon as this is over," Bones told him, bouncing Beth in his lap, "You are going to Medical."
Jim was too tired to argue and merely nodded in response, as he caught the look in Uhura's eyes. She'd been quiet since they'd boarded the shuttle, Sulu confident at the helm, and she was still, though her gaze was loud and laden in questions.
It was not only her, he realized a second later, and, taking Beth from Bones, told him, "You explain. I'll just trip over my own tongue."
