They've lived in family housing a short six months when Jim comes home from classes, exhausted and in need of a meal, to find the babysitter passed out on the couch. Joanna and Gabriel are fine – they'd been fed and bathed earlier and were even read a story before Sarah decided to lay down for a quick nap.

“Just five more minutes until she gets up,” Joanna says as she explains that the girl does this every night – fifteen minutes on the couch prior to whomever of the men is due home.

Jim, however, is seething. Joanna is five, Gabriel a scant ten months; they have a babysitter because they're babies, not untrustworthy fourteen year olds, and what if there'd been an accident? A fire?

He marches into the living space to see Sarah's awake and surprised that he's there. “Jim... I was... I just...”

“Save it and get out. Before Bones gets home,” he growls, and adds, “I'll talk to you later when I'm not fucking pissed as hell.”

She starts to argue and defend, talks about long classes, work, and extracurriculars while Jim shouts back because damnit, those are his children. Even if Joanna doesn't share his blood, she's his when she calls for Mommy after a nightmare and wants to be held when she's sick; Gabriel's his and the blue eyes prove it, but he clings to Bones like a limpet and Jim's okay with that in ways he never thought he would be.

The possibilities of what could have happened while Sarah slept continue to roll through his head and he finally grabs her backpack, takes one wrist in his hand and tells her, “Do not come back,” before turning to face the stricken-faced toddlers.

“Mommy?” Joanna whispers as Gabriel mouths, “Mama,” with hands raised.

Jim swallows and sits, aware that Bones is due home in seconds and this situation is going to be filled with anger and accusations. Sarah's going to end up being called before the Dean of Family Housing, the man who put together the list of in-home childcare givers, and might even lose that as a source of income. Which Jim doesn't care about because if she's that overworked that she's napping while children play, then she shouldn't be doing it.

Still, when it comes to Joanna and Gabriel, Bones has no shame and no control. He's protective of the children, worrying constantly over them when he's away and Jim can't imagine what life would be like if the court had let Jocelyn take Jo.

The hiss of the door breaks him from his thoughts, causing Jim to take in one breath and prepare before his lover is there and he starts.
